THE 1ST PARACHUTE CHASSEUR REGIMENT THROUGH ITS PENNANTS 1937–2019
With this unprecedented and richly illustrated work, the history of the 1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment (1st RCP) is revisited and expanded: for the first time, the combat actions and day-to-day training of the 1st RCP are recounted through the regiment's many pennants.
A great number of them have weathered the storms of history into which the 1st RCP has been plunged since its origins in the air infantry groups through to the recent Mali campaign.
As the oldest of all French parachute regiments, the 1st RCP has traversed contemporary military history. The pennants lead us through the complex twists and turns of unit formations shaped by events. They are as varied as the 13 companies that composed the battalions of the 1st RCP.
Colonel Gérard de Badts and a team from the 1st RCP carried out a fascinating research project, focusing on revealing the history of each pennant. They traced the individual liberties that were sometimes taken, which often inaugurated a tradition. For it is indeed tradition that is at stake here — one cemented by esprit de corps. Proud of its origins and conscious of its duties, the 1st RCP continues to honour its pennants. It was fitting to share this tribute.
