Following the introduction of the first reconnaissance armoured car model adopted in 1933 (AMR 33), the cavalry requested an improved version from Renault, with a rear-mounted engine. It was adopted in 1935, hence its designation AMR 35.

It was produced in numerous versions, with varied armament (7.5 mm or 13.2 mm machine gun, 25 mm anti-tank gun) and served as the basis for two models of command cars fitted with radios.
