The tank was known by several nicknames: Sherman (by the British), Medium Tank M4 and then Sherman (by the Americans), and Emcha (by the Soviets).

Designed by the Americans in 1941 initially to serve during the Second World War and operated into the 1970s, the M4 Sherman was produced in nearly fifty thousand units, surpassing both the German Tiger and Panther. The M4 Sherman served with the US Army and US Marine Corps in their wartime operations, and also equipped the British Army and Commonwealth forces, the USSR, Free France, the Polish government-in-exile, Brazil and China.

The Sherman's career extended into the post-war period, seeing action in the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, with the Israel Defense Forces during the Six-Day War of 1967 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
