The work traces in detail the fighting from 20 to 24 August, on the eve of the fall of the capital. For several days the front settled along a line of nearly 150 kilometres between Mantes and Montereau. The reader follows the fighting in Paris itself, in the suburbs, and at the bridgeheads of Mantes, Melun, Corbeil, Fontainebleau and Montereau. Above Mantes, the Luftwaffe unleashed its fury; aircraft had not been seen in such numbers for a long time. But the US anti-aircraft artillery kept a sharp watch — with devastating results.
