For nearly a hundred years, the Dauphiné, the County of Savoy, the County of Geneva, and several small principalities (Thoire-Villars, Beaujeu, Valentinois, Faucigny...) were locked in a merciless feudal war. In 1325, during one of the countless military campaigns, the Count of Savoy, Edward the Liberal, besieged the castle of Varey with his allies. The young Dauphin Guigues VIII and his vassals rushed to the relief of the stronghold. On the plain of Varey, the two lords came face to face. This work recounts the battle itself while also tracing the history of this endless war that led a contemporary to compose the fatalistic verse: "This war can find no end, nor does one know who is wrong or who is right."
