Built in hundreds of units and commanded by aces with resounding successes, the Typ VII more than earned its nickname of "workhorse of the U-Bootwaffe" in the Atlantic.

Yet it is often overlooked that, while it was indeed designed before the war as an intermediate vessel with balanced performance, the original model rapidly gave way during hostilities to a whole succession of improved variants. For, faced with escorts and aircraft, the Typ VII had to adapt to survive. Faster, better armed, capable of greater depths, more modern and simpler to mass-produce, its plans, dimensions and performance evolved considerably between 1935 and 1944, with no fewer than six variants built and three others studied but ultimately abandoned.


In this new work by Xavier Tracol, all these versions are presented clearly and concisely, explaining why and how each was designed. Each is accompanied by precise technical specifications, period photographs and carefully selected 3D views chosen to match the text.

 

This book will enable the reader to understand what distinguishes a Typ VIIC from a Typ VIIC/41, why there was never a Typ VIIE when a Typ VIIF did exist, or what particular armament the Typ VIID carried.
