From December 1941, the German submarine arm saw its operational area in the Atlantic extend all the way to the American coastline. The convoy war took on a new scale, soon spreading to engulf the Arctic and the Indian Ocean as well.

In the spring of 1943, American technological innovation and industrial might, combined with the British decryption of the Enigma machine, gradually put an end to the impunity of the "Grey Wolves" in the heart of the ocean. As U-boat losses mounted catastrophically, Admiral Dönitz placed his last hopes of success on new technologically advanced submarine designs, as well as on commando units equipped with human torpedoes and midget submarines.
