On 31 July 1914, at five o'clock in the morning, notary Duquenne, burgomaster of Lobbes, was ordered to post the military mobilisation notice in his commune. Like the entire population of the neighbouring villages of the Haute-Sambre, he would witness requisitions, the deployment of Red Cross units and the return of expatriates from the belligerent countries. After the repeated passage of French regiments, a violent and highly deadly battle would drench the beautiful Thudinian valley in blood. He would be a witness before becoming a hostage in the service of the German high commands during the siege of the fortress of Maubeuge. As this chance engagement gave no time for the evacuation of all inhabitants, they left to subsequent generations many written and sometimes material recollections. These first pages of the Great War, written by civilians, vividly describe the horror endured, the suffering borne and the efforts to survive amid the turmoil. In those days of barbarism, these non-combatants were the Third actor — suffering and reborn to a greater humanity.
