The year 1799 begins as 1798 ended, in the calm that precedes every storm. France now possesses six "sister republics" (Batavian, Cisalpine and Ligurian, Helvetic, Roman and Neapolitan) and prepares to confront the Second Coalition — this time bolstered by Russia — in Egypt, Italy and Helvetia.

With Bonaparte far from Europe, his adversaries invade and destroy, battle by battle, everything the French have built over the previous three years. The final third of the year sees the Austro-Russian forces gradually pushed back, and Bonaparte, riding hard, seize power and establish a strong government.

This very long year of 1799 would close without any definitive military solution having been found. It would take until 1800 and the decisive victories of Hohenlinden and Marengo before any hope of silencing the guns came into view.

All these vicissitudes are recounted by Lionel Marquis in this work of nearly 300 pages, richly illustrated with more than two hundred images. Ten uniform plates by André Jouineau complement the author's work.
