LINE INFANTRY Volume 1 - 1776–1810
For Napoleon, "the infantry is the soul of the army". It did indeed comprise the greater part of the combatants under arms. We shall examine closely these "pousse-cailloux" — foot soldiers who tramped across Europe in every direction for nearly a quarter of a century. With the exception of the particular case of the Imperial Guard, the French infantry under the Empire was divided into two broad categories: the line infantry and the light infantry.
The former formed the main body of this fighting mass. This work is entirely unprecedented in France. The approximately 120 plates drawn by André Jouineau and commented upon by Jean-Marie Mongin present the soldiers of the Line Infantry, queen of battles, from the foot soldiers of Louis XVI to those of Charles X — not forgetting, of course, the infantry of the Revolution and the grognards of the Emperor.
A handsome hardbound book, precise, clear, logical and visual, this genuine vade mecum for the enthusiast of a period of military history that has received little treatment is intended both for devotees of the history of the period and for figure painters.
