David Crook joined the Royal Auxiliary Air Force in 1938 and was posted to No. 609 Squadron, a unit that was soon to distinguish itself during the Battle of Britain.

During those few months he kept a diary in which he recounts in vivid detail the aerial combats, the victories and the tragedies that marked the daily life of the heroes of British air defence throughout that long summer of 1940. Previously unpublished in French, his diary was published in Great Britain.
