The military life of Jean-François Cowez under the Empire (1809–1815)

Through the previously unpublished account of Jean-François Cowez, we enter the grand sweep of History through a side door left ajar by a young soldier of the First Empire. He recounts numerous anecdotes which, throughout his manuscript, reflect a life containing more days of suffering than moments of glory. To be convinced of this, one need only imagine the ordeal that his constant search for food, for a roof to sleep under must have been, and estimate the number of pairs of shoes he wore out on the roads of Europe during endless marches.

Cowez took part in the 1809 campaign in Austria and Germany, then in the campaign in Spain and Portugal from 1810 to 1813. Captured in August 1813, he then shares with us his daily life as a prisoner aboard a British hulk through a narrative as gripping as it is rare. Repatriated to Brest in June 1814, he witnessed the Emperor's return the following year. He ended his military career on the battlefield of Ligny before being returned to civilian life in his village in Belgium.
