In the French Navy, the daily life of crews is shaped by striking contrasts unknown in any other profession: modernity and tradition, obedience and command, storms and flat calms, night and day, communal life and solitary existence, vast expanses of ocean and the confinement of a closed world — all of these run through every mission and every life at sea. And what of the astonishing contrast between a posting aboard the schooner Belle-Poule and one aboard the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, between the silence of winds filling the sails and the deafening catapult launch of a Rafale Marine echoing through the belly of the beast…?

These contrasts seem to be opposites — is not night the inverse of day? Are not modernity and tradition antonyms? Is not solidarity a value far removed from solitude?

And yet, the whole thing works. What if these contrasts represented not oppositions, but complementarities?

This work sets out to illustrate the concept of contrast within the French Navy through more than 250 photographs taken by the author during numerous embarkations from 1990 to 2024.
