Lieutenant Marchal had the singular distinction of being the only Allied pilot to have flown over Berlin between 1914 and 1918, during an epic raid of nearly 1,300 kilometres. Moreover, his improbable escape from the famous Magdeburg camp in the company of Roland Garros had been widely reported in the press of the time, and this wild adventure would inspire Jean Renoir in 1937 when writing the screenplay of La Grande Illusion and crafting the character of "Lieutenant Maréchal" played by Jean Gabin.

This account is presented for the first time in nearly a century to today's readers in a volume that endeavours to place the narrative in its historical context and to retrace the journey of this aviator, an adventurer from the heroic dawn of aviation.
