Rather than a farewell to arms, the brutal crushing of Poland in 1939 opened a new chapter in her history — that of continuing the fight from abroad. In those dark days, France crystallised all of Poland's hopes. For did not this historic ally possess the finest army in the world?

At the head of the government-in-exile, General Sikorski raised an army of 80,000 men with ground, air and naval components. A mountain brigade was committed in Norway. Two divisions fought on the Maginot Line and in the Clos du Doubs; an armoured brigade withdrew with the armies of Champagne.

More modest units fought in the Breton redoubt and at the far reaches of national territory, while aviators contested control of the airspace.

From carpeted offices to tragic battlefields, this book traces the political and military efforts deployed by the Poles between the defeat of their country and that of France. For as General de Gaulle observed, throughout history, "the success or misfortune of one has always been linked to the success or misfortune of the other."
