Put into service at the dawn of the 1930s, the Enigma machine ensured the encryption of Wehrmacht communications throughout the Second World War. The ability to defeat the billions of combinations generated by its mechanisms stands as one of the principal contributions to victory over the Third Reich.

While the cryptological work carried out at Bletchley Park manor is relatively well known, its Polish roots tend to remain obscure. Yet they are no less decisive: with the help of French intelligence, the Biuro Szyfrów in Warsaw cracked the German cipher as early as 1932 — eight years before the British!

On the eve of the Nazi invasion, the small team of precursors shares its knowledge with the Allies, while taking care to keep its secret safe from enemy prying eyes. Their adventures continue in France until the 1940 armistice, then in the Free Zone and North Africa until 1942.

Far from being limited to the reflections of brilliant mathematicians and the reading of crucial dispatches, the adventures of these decryption pioneers reveal a gallery of secret service figures made up of Hollywood-style spies, double agents and unscrupulous passeurs.
