On the morning of 1 September 1939, 4,000 men set out to face German forces south of Kraków. They came from the 10th Cavalry Brigade, the only large motorised unit in the Polish army, and unknowingly embarked on an unprecedented epic.

Holding three Wehrmacht divisions in check to the eastern borders of Poland, they managed despite the defeat to cross into France, where the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade, reconstituted, was engaged in the desperate fighting of June 1940. A large part of its soldiers managed once again to avoid encirclement and reach Scotland, where they formed the 1st Polish Armoured Division. With 16,000 men, it landed in Normandy to play a crucial role in closing the Falaise-Chambois pocket. This was followed by the pursuit of the enemy through Belgium and into the Netherlands. The ultimate revenge came in the spring of 1945 with the invasion of Germany. From the Beskid Mountains to the plains of Germany, by way of the Burgundian hillsides and the hills of the Pays d'Auge, this book invites the reader to discover this odyssey, unique in the history of the Second World War.
