Almost encircled and pressed on all sides, two German armies organise their withdrawal during the battle of the Falaise-Chambois pocket. For the Americans, as for the Poles, Canadians, French and British, there is only one objective: Chambois!

The G.I.s of the 90th US Inf Div, supported by the French 2nd Armoured Division, advance to within just six kilometres of the village when a strongpoint blocks their path: the village of Le Bourg-Saint-Léonard. One of the most battle-hardened regiments of the Waffen-SS has also received orders to seize it.

The evacuation of the entire German army is at stake. The capture of Chambois by the 90th US Inf Div costs one man every seven and a half minutes between 16 and 21 August 1944.

This skilfully crafted book offers the reader a genuine guide to the route taken by the American units in the capture of Chambois.

96 photographs, some previously unpublished, including on-site reports, bring to the narrative a clarity and precision unmatched until now on the subject.

Once in position with limited forces, they establish defensive positions between Caumont-l'Éventé and Bérigny, awaiting the rest of the division. Inevitably, the Americans attack in force with elite divisions such as the 29th US Inf Div, the 2nd US Inf Div and the 1st US Inf Div. A genuine fight to the death unfolds between the two sides.

The Fallschirmjäger rapidly lose between 300 and 400 men per day, barely replaced. They lack heavy support and the Luftwaffe is absent from the skies. It falls to them to engage the fighter-bombers with Flak or machine guns. Apart from the Meindl Corps assault gun brigade, they have no armour to assist them, yet must face four armoured battalions…
