Did a true "5th column", in the manner of that put into practice by the Francoist general Mola during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, beneath the walls of Madrid, actually exist at the outset of the Second World War, activated by the German invader? It may seem self-evident that the notion of a fifth column did indeed feature in the Nazi plans for the invasion of the whole of Europe. While its violent content, as in Spain, did not truly materialise, it is nonetheless impossible not to speak of infiltration — a particularly insidious infiltration taking many different forms.

This work traces several lines of inquiry to demonstrate that for a long time — especially from Adolf Hitler's seizure of power in Germany in 1933 — Germany had been dreaming of revenge, above all against France.
