The history of the Panzerwaffe begins in 1916, when the Germans became aware of the potential impact of tanks on the art of war. Deprived of armour as a result of the limitations imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, they studied in depth the tactical lessons of the previous conflict in order to develop a revolutionary doctrine of employment and an armoured force capable of putting it into practice.

This work analyses the development of Germanic mechanised thinking and explains the methods put into practice. An essential work for understanding the origins and combat methods of the Panzerwaffe.

Illustrated with over 250 photographs and tactical diagrams, this book takes you successively into the offices of military planners, into the mechanical heart of the Panzers, and into the midst of Kriegspiel.
