The guides, formed by the necessities of war alongside general staffs (in the roles of escort, guard and dispatch), quickly became the object of generals' solicitude, a reflection of the military prestige of their commanders and a true praetorian guard.

The finest example of this evolution was that of Bonaparte's guides with Bessières at their head — one of the nuclei of the future Imperial Guard. The guides would be present in nearly all the armies of the Republic, the Consulate and the Empire, and yet they remain largely forgotten to this day. They served commanders of illustrious names, the Emperor first among them.

Wherever the Republic, and later the Empire, planted the tricolour flags, they were present. This sixteenth volume redresses the injustice done to these elite soldiers.
