The Slang of the Poilus in 10 Lessons
Like any group living in upon itself, the poilus developed their own language. While some words are neologisms, most are derived from old words, Parisian slang and regional patois, trade jargon, and even foreign languages… Each of these words thus has its own history and lineage.
This slang allowed fighters to assert their membership of the community and to reinforce the solidarity indispensable to the group's survival (the trench newspapers — produced by and for the poilus — abound with examples of this trench slang); it also responded to the need to speak of the violence of the conflict, both among combatants and with the home front, as evidenced by letters sent to families. Humorous, enigmatic, exotic, ironic, the slang of the poilus was a clever means of stepping back and deflating the drama of daily life.
Whether they fell into disuse after the war or became durably embedded in the language, the slang of the poilus constitutes a precious indicator of the combatant experience.
