In 1217, Prince Louis of France (the future Louis VIII, son of Philip II Augustus and father of Saint Louis) was waging war in England in the hope of seizing the crown. The convoy bringing him vital reinforcements was intercepted at sea, somewhere between Dover, Sandwich and South Foreland, and never reached the English coast. This naval battle is memorable on more than one count. First for its antiquity, as it is one of the earliest Franco-English engagements at sea. For the tactical skill of the English, highly innovative for the period. For the extraordinary personality of the French commander, Eustace the Monk, a former monk turned pirate and warlord who sold his sword to the highest bidder.
