Southwest of Lyon, April 1362. Led by the Constable of France, Jacques de Bourbon, the French army marches on the small town of Brignais, occupied by bands of routiers. These soldiers, idle since the signing of the Treaty of Brétigny two years earlier, roam the roads and spread terror throughout the southern provinces of the kingdom of France. Although the outcome of the engagement should have seen an easy victory for the royal host, nothing of the sort occurred, and as Jean Favier writes in his work La guerre de Cent Ans, "the French chivalry is cut to pieces by the professionals of war." This work traces not only the course of the battle, but also its context and its consequences for the Lyon region and the surrounding provinces.
