From 1940 to 1966, the French Army underwent three successive purges: the first under Marshal Pétain's Vichy government, the second from 1943 through the years following the Liberation, and the last from the end of the Algerian War up to the eve of the May 1968 events.

The purge most familiar to the public is the one that affected civilian society at the Liberation; the military purge, by contrast, is far less well known. Yet it was almost continuous for more than a quarter of a century, during which it was most often carried out through the actions of General de Gaulle. These purges practically only affected the officer corps, whose members were each time confronted with a choice that could not, at one moment or another, but bring them into conflict with their duty of obedience.

This is the first time a work has tackled a subject as sensitive as it is little known. By studying it over an extended period and placing it within a historical perspective, it becomes clear that a distinctly French ideological impulse predominates, largely accounting for these successive purges.
