Before achieving the deployment of the powerful Panzer VI Tiger I and II, armed with an 8.8 cm gun that would terrify an entire generation of Allied tank crews, the Germans had to study dozens of projects, sometimes reaching technological dead ends.

Even before the Tiger clashed with the T-34/76 on the Russian plains, or the Panzer VIII Maus turned its first tracks, German engineers (including Professor Porsche) had conducted numerous studies — sometimes tinged with a surprising gigantism or ahead of their time — which still retain an element of mystery today following the destruction of a portion of the archives at the end of the Second World War.

This new book sets out to take stock of the German heavy tank programmes, from the Versuchskraftfahrzeug 30.01 to the various Löwe models armed with a 10.5 or 15 cm gun, including an overview of the work on the 1,000-tonne land cruiser dubbed Landkreuzer P.1000 Ratte, equipped with 28 cm guns, and a summary of the E-75/100 projects, to name but a few — launched as early as the 1930s and ending in the ruins of the III. Reich in May 1945.

A richly illustrated compendium of previously unpublished photographs, plans, colour profiles, and 3D drawings.
