Born in the early 1970s, the T-72 very quickly became the backbone of Soviet armoured divisions in the second half of the Cold War. Distinguished by its robustness and reliability, the tank above all closed a period of doubt and hesitation within the Soviet military-industrial apparatus: the T-55 and T-62 were rapidly obsolete and the T-64 was too expensive to produce. The path to fame was therefore clear for the T-72, which would equip all the armies of the Warsaw Pact and achieve considerable export success.

Proof, if any were needed, of its effectiveness, it still constitutes the bulk of the armoured equipment of many countries around the world today. Since the first version of the T-72, more than a dozen variants have been developed to meet the increasingly pressing demands of modern warfare.

Describing all versions (from the T-72 to the most recent, the T-72B3 Obr. 2022) with precision, the author revisits the remarkable destiny of this MBT that imposed itself on the battlefield — and has not yet finished its track miles, as it is still encountered under Russian or Ukrainian colours since the outbreak of the war between Kyiv and Moscow in February 2022.
