Inside the city, only fighters remained. The men of Staff Sergeant Bellavia's infantry section moved in to take the ground. The fighting would last three weeks. He recounts his experience.

During the night of 6 to 7 November 2004, American and Iraqi forces launched their assault on the Islamist stronghold of Fallujah, a city of nearly 300,000 inhabitants located some sixty kilometres from Baghdad, at the heart of the Baathist Sunni triangle. Forewarned of the American offensive, three quarters of the population had fled the city, but more than 3,000 Islamist fighters of various nationalities had chosen to dig in and turn Fallujah into an impregnable fortress. Fanatical and prepared to fight to the death, they had transformed the "City of Mosques" into a lethal labyrinth: car bombs, mined streets, booby traps, barricaded buildings, snipers in ambush... While the men of Staff Sergeant Bellavia's mechanised infantry section waited to enter the city, supported by their Bradley fighting vehicles and Abrams tanks, they had no idea they were about to spend nearly three weeks fighting an invisible and unleashed enemy.
