War in the Open Sky - Iraq 1991, the Dreamed Victory
Ideal victory or illusory victory? An idealized victory in any case, the Gulf War was born from the symmetrical confrontation of the Cold War. It is at once rooted in the 20th century and heralding today's conflicts centred on the mastery of information. The current situation in the Middle East also reveals its long-term consequences. It is therefore rich in lessons regarding the role of airpower in conflict resolution, and the limits of a Western vision of military confrontation against an adversary who evades on the ground in order to develop a psychological strategy.
After a first analytical work on this conflict in 1996, quickly out of print, and drawing on twenty-five years of studies and expert meetings in the United States, Europe and the Middle East, the author revisits the question today, exploiting for the first time Iraqi sources seized during the 2003 invasion and recently declassified American documents, in this reference work of twenty precisely documented and richly illustrated chapters.
