André Hébert is the pseudonym of a young Frenchman who left to fight for fifteen months against the Islamic State alongside the Kurds of Syria. In Jusqu'à Raqqa, the site of the last battle he fought with his comrades of the YPG, "the People's Protection Units", in the jihadists' capital, he delivers the first and essential first-hand account of this conflict.

Reading this war diary, one plunges into the harsh daily life of those waging the fight against Daesh and into the ferocity of the battles that pit them against each other. 

There are 700 volunteers from all over the world — including around thirty French nationals — who wish to replicate in Syrian Kurdistan the fight of the International Brigades in Spain, and it is to them too that André Hébert wishes to pay tribute. A handful of soldiers amid an army composed of Kurds, Arabs, Yazidi Kurds and Turks. Many die in a war where car bombs, suicide bombers and improvised mines cause as much devastation as conventional weapons.


After being briefly imprisoned in Erbil, in Iraqi Kurdistan, it is the officers of the DGSI who pick him up at his Parisian home as he is about to leave for Syria again to take part in the final pursuit against Daesh. Determined, André Hébert takes the French State to court and manages to reach the combat zone a second time. All the way to Raqqa. Amid its ruins, he takes part in the last and furious clashes against jihadists who have nothing left to lose and who will make their defeat come at a heavy price.
