This "Street Without Joy", a narrow strip of land between the sea and the mountains of Annam, theatre of bloody fighting, was one of the focal points of the Indochina War that dominated French politics from 1946 to 1954 and whose memory weighed heavily on the Algerian tragedy. Rising from the ashes again in 1957, it thereafter never ceased to pose an insoluble problem for the United States. Unable to resolve their own contradictions, Laos and the two Vietnams nonetheless managed to overcome the finest armies in the world.

Why and how? Bernard Fall, who made this place a symbol of the Indochinese disaster, answers both questions with the authority of a specialist in South-East Asia and in subversive warfare. He is the only writer to have been granted access to the official archives of the Corps Expéditionnaire d'Indochine. But his answer is also that of a direct witness. Neither a soldier nor a journalist, he took part in operations in the field, sometimes behind enemy lines, and gathered from the very mouths of survivors accounts of the appalling ambushes that marked this war. A key witness to the French agony in Indochina, he has written its defining work.
