Renowned as an architect of genius for his restoration of illustrious monuments such as Mont Saint-Michel, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, the Cité de Carcassonne, the Château de Pierrefonds, and many others, E. Viollet-Le-Duc pursued his exploration of French medieval society by producing a monumental work: le Dictionnaire raisonné du mobilier français, de l'époque carolingienne à la Renaissance, in six volumes, from which the present work is drawn.

This exceptional book, following the Dictionnaire des armes offensives et défensives, draws extensively on medieval texts and provides unprecedented insight into the ways of life, habits, and hardships of daily existence in that era, giving the work a prominent historical dimension.
