Remembrance ceremony at the war memorial, historical reenactment in period costume, or musical reading of Resistance poets… Such are some of the commemorative practices at work from one end of Europe to the other at the dawn of the twenty-first century. What is the situation at the level of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, particularly with regard to commemorations of the last great conflicts?

The territorialisation of the event, and the proximity or otherwise of its epicentre, are powerful factors of differentiation between regions and departments. Are we really so "far from the front lines" in this vast territory stretching from the Cantal to Mont Blanc, from the ponds of the Dombes to the Tricastin, bordering Italy and Switzerland, which brings together territories with differing characteristics and histories?

This richly illustrated volume is the culmination of a shared field experience by researchers and heads of museum institutions on what makes commemoration, yesterday and today, and also on what it does — through the practices, uses and social appropriations to which it gives rise.
