Beyond the honours and commemorations, let us remember what the Maquis were… Who were their leaders? Why were young Frenchmen driven to resist by the compulsion of an unacceptable reality, without having fought as free men? The refusal of the STO for some, of the Occupation for others, made them outlaws in the eyes of the Vichy authorities, pushing them to take refuge in "maquis" — remote, often hostile places, but indispensable to their survival.

From the smallest Maquis cells — three or four men at most — to the large, fraternally organized military communities, this work brings back to light the depth of commitment embodied by these Resistance fighters. Through documents, photographs and letters, it contributes to perpetuating and honouring their memory. Only at the cost of months of waiting and uncertainty, dangerous arms drops, relentless military training, food shortages and heavy human losses did the Maquisards make their contribution to the victory of 1945. Among the most illustrious, the names of the Glières, the Vercors and Mont Mouchet evoke vast mountain massifs, but small Maquis groups too were the scene of fierce struggles waged by exceptional men. All of them echoed with the laughter of comrades-in-arms as much as with the din of battle…

Today, in the silence of these deserted places, monuments and steles invite respect for a painful yet profoundly honourable past.
