Following "Des soldats méridionaux dans la guerre 1914–1918" published in 2018, here is the second volume, entitled "Amère Victoire. Des soldats méridionaux, juin 1919 à juin 1940."

The Treaty of Versailles in June 1919 resolved none of the rivalries between nations still bled dry by the war of 1914–1918. The Midi attempted to rebuild a different world, incorporating the cult of those who died for France. Southern soldiers, like those from every region of the country, learned that self-defence against invasion had to come first. The Maginot Line caused people to forget "the other war" that was, nevertheless, already in preparation.

Most garrison towns in the south-east, though far removed from the northern or eastern frontiers, were swept up in the race towards war. The German offensive of May 1940 also brought to light the Army of the Alps, commanded by General Olry. This army, composed of many men from the Midi, would prove that anything is possible in certain hours, in the face of adversity.

Uniforms, headdress, equipment and documents from the author's collection accompany several military episodes from this dramatic and sometimes epic period. Once again, they are "silent witnesses."

A "Bitter Victory" indeed — both for the Peace Treaty of 1919, and for those soldiers of the Midi, some of whom never capitulated in June 1940. This local history, lived by southern soldiers from June 1919 to June 1940, also illuminates our present society: in the face of events, reactions arise. Terribly relevant today.

Éric Grieu is a passionate devotee of our past. Over more than 35 years of research and collecting, he has amassed a collection of everyday objects, uniforms, newspapers and numerous military souvenirs from both World Wars that passed through the Midi. Through this book, he seeks to reveal their meaning, their values and their history. Encounters such as that with Jean-Pierre Verney, a specialist in the First World War and a collector himself, have only reinforced his desire to transmit and share his knowledge.
