Opening a trunk and stepping into a century that already seems so distant may seem a daunting task. And yet, drawing on part of his collection assembled over more than thirty-five years, the author reviews the experiences and feelings of southern soldiers from 1900 to 1927, with a close focus on the period 1914–1918.

Many aspects of garrison life (including Pont-Saint-Esprit) in the Gard and surrounding areas, within what was known as the XVth Military Region, are evoked. Then comes the entry into war, with enthusiasm and clear-sightedness described week by week and month by month. Positional warfare, the trenches, accounts from the front and life behind the lines. The Great War as lived by all these men of the Midi, from Marseille to Orange, through the Rhodanian Gard and the first foothills of the Cévennes.

Mute archives, they witnessed and heard everything more than a hundred years ago. For their author, this book is also a bridge between these southern soldiers and their museum-worthy effects, and our present world, which all too often forgets its roots and its mistakes.

Éric Grieu is a passionate devotee of our past. Over more than 35 years of research and collecting, he has amassed a collection of everyday objects, uniforms, newspapers and numerous military souvenirs from both World Wars that passed through the Midi. Through this book, he seeks to reveal their meaning, their values and their history. Encounters such as that with Jean-Pierre Verney, a specialist in the First World War and a collector himself, have only reinforced his desire to transmit and share his knowledge.
