From the Far East to the coastal squadron of La Baule-Le Croisic, we follow — thanks to his family's archives — the adventures of a young carpenter from the Loire Valley, enlisted as a ship's carpenter in 1912. The outbreak of war in August 1914 finds him in Hokkaido, serving aboard the armoured cruiser Dupleix. Back in France, he takes part in early 1915 in surveillance cruises in the western Mediterranean (Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia), then joins the naval base at Lemnos in Greece under the orders of the vice-admiral commanding the Dardanelles Squadron. In April 1917, assigned to the coastal squadron as a naval observer-bombardier, he secures the defence of the Atlantic coastline against German submarine activity and the protection of the first American convoys bound for Saint-Nazaire. Robert Palliot — for that was his name — flew until December 1918.
