After landing on 6 June 1944 at Omaha Beach, the GIs of the 1st Infantry Division — nicknamed the Big Red One — must press on fighting against the 352.Inf.Div. To do so, they go three days and three nights without sleep. Shortly afterwards, they receive orders to take Caumont-l'Éventé.

For these GIs, it is the next ordeal in establishing the Omaha Beach bridgehead once and for all. To capture this locality of great strategic importance, they advance 23 kilometres, creating a salient in the German lines. But they do not yet know that the formidable 2.Pz.-Div. is being moved up to their front, and that its reconnaissance elements are already establishing defences to receive them…

Assisted by Pierre-Louis Gosselin, founder of the Big Red One museum at Colleville-sur-Mer — who studied the terrain, collected documents, photographs and personal items, and maintained close contact with a significant number of veterans of that division — Didier Lodieu has given his best to offer readers a vivid and original study of one of the forgotten pages of the Battle of Normandy.
