From July 1870 to June 1871, Fusilier Fritz Fischer was on campaign: he fought several times, marched a great deal, and discovered a country — France!
2,500 km on foot, around a hundred different billets — some for a single night, others interminable such as the two months spent in the mud before Metz — major battles (Gravelotte, Orléans…) and skirmishes, rough or friendly contacts with civilians, good comrades and cowards, conflicts with the hierarchy, respected commanders and incompetent officers: so many opportunities to accumulate anecdotes…
In 1895, drawing on notes taken day by day and letters sent to his loved ones, Fusilier Fritz Fischer of Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 36 reconstructed the entirety of his French campaign. In the foreword he states that he had no intention whatsoever of "embellishing or distorting anything, let alone drawing attention to his own person". This last point is something of a minor falsehood, for our man has a certain tendency to brag — yet this makes him an engaging and often amusing narrator, who brings us inside and from the victors' perspective into this forgotten war.
