Pegasus Bridge, the capture of Ranville bridge and the fighting that followed

In the night of 4 to 5 June 1944, gliders of the British 6th Airborne Division landed silently near several key points east of the Orne canal. The objective was to establish a solid front to prevent any German counter-attack towards the beaches where, a few hours later, the Allied divisions committed to Operation Overlord would land.

The canal bridge, soon renamed Pegasus Bridge, was taken by surprise, followed by the Merville battery, whose guns were put out of action. On 6 June, hundreds of gliders landed near Ranville, along with thousands of paratroopers. The operation was a complete success.

For weeks, the British paratroopers held the front against attacks by the 21. Panzer-Division in a form of positional warfare rare in Normandy. It was not until July 1944 that the British began to push southward — not without difficulty, the failure of Operation Goodwood being the most striking example.

This book recounts in detail all the little-known aspects of a forgotten battle on the Normandy front.
