During the Algerian War, the paratroopers were at the forefront of the fighting. They faced the most hardened moudjahidines in the most remote djebels. Yet, nearly six decades later, does anyone still remember that some of these elite units had conscripts making up the majority of their ranks?

Such was the case of the 14th Régiment de chasseurs parachutistes. This work brings to life the final months of these red berets on African soil, from September 1959 to April 1961 — a period that coincided with the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Pierre Lecomte, their last commanding officer, whom his men had nicknamed "Le Renard Argenté" (The Silver Fox).

Beyond their daily routine of exhausting marches and sometimes deadly combat waged from Kabylia to the Aurès, the author explains how measured, balanced and disciplined men came to take part in the Generals' Putsch in Algiers in April 1961. He also shows how the conscripts, NCOs and officers bound together by esprit de corps experienced the final months of the French presence in Algeria — a presence that divided and inflamed such passions.
