Paratroopers in Algeria 1954–1958
A dark legend surrounds the paratroopers sent to Algeria. These units, marked by the defeat at Diên Biên Phu and determined to deploy every available means to avoid a new setback, are said to have theorised counter-subversive doctrines involving the use of torture, before going on to participate in the overthrow of the Fourth Republic and the putsch of April 1961.
This schematic outline falls far short of capturing the reality of the commitment of all the "paras": a rigorous historical study is called for, drawing as closely as possible on primary sources and testimonies, one that reconstructs the trajectories and evolution of these units reserved for intervention operations.
From the first improvised helicopter operations in the djebels, carried out under pressure and urgency, to the battle of the frontiers — by way of the parachute drop on Suez, the Battle of Algiers and pursuits across the desert — Marie-Danielle Demélas examines how these fighters adapted to a new kind of conflict.
A comprehensive military history of elite troops caught up in a war that shook the French Republic to its foundations.
