April 1544. Almost twenty years after the humiliation of Pavia, where King Francis I was taken prisoner by the soldiers of his enemy Charles V, France resumed the offensive in Italy. The war was being fought in Piedmont, occupied by the French since 1536. Setting out from Asti, an imperial army commanded by the seasoned soldier Alfonso d'Avalos, Marquis del Vasto, marched toward the fortress of Carignan, then under French siege. The French forces, under the command of the young François de Bourbon, Count of Enghien, advanced to meet them. The first skirmish between the two armies took place on Easter Sunday at Cérisoles, with no decisive outcome. The following day, 14 April, the full battle resulted in a clear French victory. The famous Landsknechts, the spearhead of Del Vasto's army, were defeated by the French infantry.
