On his first overseas mission, Captain Guillaume Ancel, aged 27, arrives in Cambodia in May 1992 — a country ravaged by twenty years of war. Alongside the soldiers of the UNTAC peacekeeping mission (United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia), the task is to enforce the Paris Agreements, beginning with the disarmament of the factions. Easier said than done. Guillaume Ancel discovers a country riddled with mines and plunged into chaos.

A third of its population had disappeared, largely during the genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge. His mission: to meet some of their leaders and persuade them to lay down their arms. As a negotiator, he carries none himself. As patrol commander, he leads soldiers from the "army of the world" drawn from China, America, Nepal, Italy and Uruguay.

The account of the collaboration between these men, at the heart of darkness, is one of the illuminating threads of this book. Un casque bleu chez les Khmers rouges is also an unflinching testimony, as with the author's previous works on his missions in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. Guillaume Ancel conceals neither the failings nor the sometimes terrible excesses of those who came to make peace.
