While the actions and crimes of the German units have long been well documented through various writings on the internal Resistance that distinguished itself in the south-east of France, the reality of the individual combatant remains very largely unknown (and not free of errors, such as the supposed involvement of Waffen-SS). This is explained primarily by an almost total absence of contemporary photographic sources and public archival holdings… If the Glières and Vercors maquis hold an essential place in the epic of the Liberation, the soldier on the other side — whether officer or simple infantryman — has been the subject of no detailed study in now seventy-five years, and few veterans have spoken…

Drawing on the few works relating to these mountain engagements, on German and French archives, and on numerous personal documents of German soldiers who served in Grenoble, the Dauphiné and Savoy — including the Soldbücher, rich in information, and the Sterbebilder — Michel Lallemant describes the composition of the German forces involved; he meticulously reconstructs the chronology of events and the careers of the principal officers and commanders.

Having grown up in Grenoble, he has been attempting for several decades to reconstruct part of this reality of the adversaries of former times — their origins, their units, their fates… a long, tortuous journey, approached with care. At times he has come across surprising coincidences. During Operation "Vercors", aimed at destroying the maquis in July 1944, beyond the airborne component of KG.200, the bulk of the ground engagement fell to the 157. Reserve-Division, a little-known, highly heterogeneous formation composed in part of Gebirgsjäger — often very young men from Bavaria: without pathos and without any apology, the author immerses us once again in these tragic events. Also of considerable interest, he has notably analysed, in close detail, the losses of this division from the beginning of the Occupation to the retreat of late August 1944…
