DURING THE CONFLICT OF 1939-1945, the Château de Versailles and its gardens changed in appearance the better to protect themselves. Deemed particularly at risk, the monument took on a «war footing» as early as the summer of 1939 and gradually resumed its former appearance over the following years.

By turns barricaded, occupied and then liberated, this national emblem reveals previously unseen facets in this work, largely devoted to photography. A selection of photographs and documents, brought together for the first time in the form of an album, shows us the château at the heart of the war and the upheavals of the mid-20th century.
