The Normandy landings on 6 June 1944 constitute one of the most formidable military operations of all time. They required manpower and preparations on a scale previously unknown in military history. The course of the operations has given rise to a wealth of works, with the battle for the Norman beaches having been the major subject of predilection for historians of the Second World War.

Here we turn to a lesser-known aspect, or at the very least the most frequently glossed over: the preparation of the operation. To encompass the question in its entirety, it is necessary to study the strategic dimension, the development of the plans, the mobilization of forces, their training, and the indispensable preliminary operations launched on the continent ahead of the amphibious assault on D-Day.

This covers strategy, training and exercises, the deception operation with Fortitude, the construction of the Mulberry projects, the arrival of GIs in England (Bolero), and the fights between British and American troops, etc. Never before has a book brought together all these unprecedented aspects, largely unknown to the general public.
