Designed by a young Red Army sergeant, Mikhail T. Kalashnikov, who wanted to provide Soviet soldiers with a quality weapon, the Kalashnikov became the symbol of communist armies and of the guerrilla movements supported by China and the USSR during the Cold War. It has since become a commercial product, sometimes arming Russia's enemies or anti-communist groups (such as the Nicaraguan "Contras"). More remarkably still, it has now become, in the world of organised crime and international terrorism, a mark of professional success, much as the Colt .45 was after the Second World War.

Experts today estimate the number of Kalashnikov assault rifles at more than one hundred million units, making it the most widely distributed light weapon in the world!

In its first part, this work describes in detail the evolution of the weapon, from the first AK-47s entering service in the Soviet Army in 1949 through to the latest AK-12s, adopted by the Russian Army in 2018. The second part reveals the various variants of the weapon manufactured outside Russia in more than thirty countries!
