Through their involvement and the historiography that has developed since the end of the conflict, the GI and the American paratrooper have become iconic figures of the June 1944 operations in Normandy.

The first took part in the landings on Utah and Omaha beaches, then played a significant role in exploiting the Allied breakout through to the closing of the Falaise Pocket. A soldier of a resolutely modern army, he presents a vision entirely at odds with that of the other belligerents, combining an extensive logistical apparatus with the extreme rationalisation of his equipment and impedimenta, as well as his manner of fighting.

The American paratrooper, for his part, entered history through the actions of the 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne Divisions, launched several hours before the first GIs set foot on the Norman beaches. These elite soldiers, equipped with specialised gear, nonetheless faced numerous challenges arising from the uncertainty surrounding their mission and a range of factors that were difficult to predict.

Two complementary booklets present in detail the characteristics of these two types of soldier, from the contents of the pack to the fighting on 6 June 1944.
