The appearance of Leclerc tanks during the Bastille Day parade is always an event, as much for the spectators as for the men manoeuvring these steel giants. With its vehicles each more impressive than the last, the Arme Blindée et Cavalerie has been one of the major components of the French Army since the Second World War.

Officially born in North Africa in 1943, the "ABC" has since distinguished itself on every battlefield, most notably during the Liberation. But the first French armoured units emerged during the Great War, and the 1920s–1930s were crucial decades for their development… right up to the disaster of May–June 1940.

Since 1945, the Arme Blindée et Cavalerie has undergone numerous overhauls, both doctrinal and material, yet remains the spearhead of the French Army. Colonel (ER) Pesqueur, commander of GE 501 between 2004 and 2006, looks back on the history of the "ABC", from its origins to the present day!
